World's First Hualong One Nuclear Reactor Passes Final Acceptance

Updated: May 18, 2023

The Nos 5 and 6 units of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC)'s Fuqing Nuclear Power Plant in Southeast China's Fujian Province, the world's first Hualong One nuclear reactor, passed final acceptance on May 5.

Hualong One is China's third generation nuclear power technology with completely independent intellectual property rights. It is based on more than 30 years of experience of scientific research, design, manufacturing, construction and operation.

Once the plant is fully operational it will form a complete set of self-developed third-generation nuclear power type standard systems in China and is expected to play a key role in optimizing the country's energy structure and promoting green and low-carbon development.

It will also serve as a reference for the subsequent mass implementation of Hualong One.

Up till now, the six units of the Fuqing Nuclear Power Plant have generated more than 250 billion kilowatt-hours of power, equaling that produced by burning about 78 million metric tons of standard coal and a reduction of 200 million tons of carbon dioxide or planting approximately 1.7 billion trees.

The Nos 5 and 6 units have an annual power output of 20 billion kWh, which is equivalent to reducing standard coal consumption by 6.24 million tons, cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 16.32 million tons, or planting 140 million trees.

The plant has brought great economic, social and environmental benefits, and contributed to realization of the country's "dual carbon" goals of peaking carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060.
