Largest Wind Power Project in Southeast Asia Breaks Ground

Updated: May 12, 2023

The Monson wind power project in Laos, the largest of its kind in Southeast Asia, recently broke ground.

Located in Sekong and Attapu provinces, it is the first wind power project in Laos and the largest of its kind contracted by Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA) overseas. It's worth noting that it is also the first cross-regional new energy project in Asia.

The project includes construction of a 600-megawatt wind farm, five booster substations, and a 500-kilovolt power transmission line.

Once operational, the project will be a main player in supplying power to Vietnam, and the first source of new energy power transmitted across the border from Laos.

Its operation will help build Laos into the "Southeast Asian battery".

It is estimated that the project will cut down carbon dioxide emissions by 35 million metric tons during its lifecycle.
