1st TBM for China's Longest High-Altitude Hydraulic Tunnel Starts Operation

Updated: May 08, 2023

The Dayu tunnel boring machine (TBM) started operation at the Napa Lake Flood Control Tunnel Project, constructed by China Railway No. 5 Engineering Group Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Railway Group Limited (CREC), in Shangri-la, Southwest China's Yunnan Province on April 23.

With an average altitude of more than 3,200 meters, the Napa Lake Flood Control Tunnel project has a total length of about 10.2 kilometers, which is the first and longest high-altitude hydraulic tunnel driving with TBM in China.

The main engine of the Dayu TBM is 20 meters long and has a diameter of 4.64 meters. Weighing about 1,000 metric tons, the machine can achieve continuous tunneling while carrying out rock-breaking, support, ventilation, and other operations.

It's worth noting that the tunneling operation of the machine has little negative impact on the environment and takes few labor resources with high construction efficiency. It is expected to be capable of digging about 500 meters under normal geological conditions every month.

Once operational, the Napa Lake Flood Control Tunnel project will effectively protect the plateau lake wetland ecosystem and contribute to flood control in Shangri-La.
