China's First High-Temperature Superconducting Electric levitation System Completes Test Run

Updated: April 19, 2023

On March 31, China's first high-temperature superconducting electric levitation all-factor experimental system, independently developed by the CRRC Corporation Limited, successfully completed its first operational test, marking a significant technological breakthrough for China in the field.

The superconducting electric maglev transportation system consists of vehicles, tracks, traction power supply, and operational communication. It is of great importance in the future construction of fast transportation channels between megacities and highly-developed economic zones in China, and will provide strong support in optimizing the country's spatial layout, promoting regional coordinated development and constructing China's comprehensive transport network.

The system has many advantages, such as its high speed, safety, greenness, intelligence, comfort, and strong environmental adaptability. It can be applied to high-speed, ultra-high-speed, and low-vacuum pipelines, with speeds of more than 600 km/h. It adopts a passive levitation method that does not require active control, is simple and highly reliable. It has a large levitation and guiding clearance, and is highly adaptable to different lines, with good acceleration. The vehicles are equipped with locomotion devices, which can run in emergencies and are incredibly safe.

This suspended operation fully verifies the key core technologies of the system, such as superconducting magnets, linear synchronous traction, induction power supply, and cryogenic refrigeration, laying a solid foundation for its engineering applications.
