The Chongqing-Kunming high-speed railway is a crucial part of the Beijing-Kunming railway a key section of China's "eight vertical and eight horizontal railways" network.

Once operational, it will be an artery linking Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality and Kunming, capital city of Yunnan Province. It is expected to greatly improve travel conditions of local residents and strengthen connectivity between the cities of the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle and the central Yunnan city cluster.

The railway will also enhance the radiation role of the central cities, support regional integration within the Yangtze River Economic Belt and strongly promote the coordinated and sustainable development of regional economy and society.
