Ansteel Releases 690-MPa Cryogenic Steel for LCO2 Carriers

Updated: March 15, 2023

Ansteel released a self-developed 690-megapascal cryogenic steel for liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2) carriers cargo tank on March 3 in Dalian, Northeast China's Liaoning Province.

The steel will be used for construction of the world's first two LCO2 carriers with the largest carrying capacity of 7,500 cubic meters each.

The steel has obtained the world's first Classification Society Certification for CO2 carrier-dedicated 690-MPa cryogenic steel and passed application performance assessment.

It is expected to be the first time that cryogenic steel has been put to practical use.

During development of the material, Ansteel gave full play to its advantages in developing marine grade metal materials and its national key laboratories. Six technical difficulties related to carbon equivalence, yield strength ratio and crack resistance of the ultra-high strength and ultra-low temperature tough steel were overcome.

Ansteel is China's leading provider of steel for shipping and ocean engineering and has the first research and development and production base focused on that product and industry. It is also the first steel enterprise in China to obtain a Classification Society Certifications, and has the most kinds of certifications.

What's more, the company has the largest output of high strength and ultra-high strength offshore equipment steel and the most product types.

So far, Ansteel has supplied more than 24 million metric tons of high-strength shipbuilding and offshore equipment steel, ranking first in the country.
