Updated: March 14, 2023

The integrated petrochemical project developed by China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) became fully operational in late February in South China's Guangdong Province.

The project is expected to process 20 million metric tons of crude oil, while producing 1.2 million tons of ethylene and 2.6 million tons of paraxylene annually.

It's worth noting that the styrene carbonate production facility capable of producing 800,000 tons of styrene carbonate is currently the largest of its kind in the world.

A national key project to support China's strategy of developing the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the project is expected to boost a new opening-up pattern for Guangdong under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative.

Once fully operational, it will help complete the petrochemical industrial chain in East Guangdong and is expected to drive middle and downstream industries valued about 560 billion yuan ($81.19 billion).

From construction to operation, various kinds of innovative techniques and domestically-made machines were adopted in the project.

What's more, a screen in the three-dimensional digital workshop of the project demonstrates its entire process of production. The 34 sets of smart systems are capable of automatically controlling production and operations, realizing integrated smart control.

Guangdong Petrochemical has more than 11 percent of the city's investment in environmental protection and the recycling rate of the water resources of the project reaches 80 percent.

Compared with other refinery enterprises with the same scale, Guangdong Petrochemical has 25 percent higher added value of products and 15 percent lower energy consumption.

At present, the company is able to produce more than 20 kinds of oil products and over 200 chemical products. Moreover, it can adjust its product mix to meet market needs.
