World's Largest Green Hydrogen Coupling Coal Chemical Project Breaks Ground

Updated: March 06, 2023

An integrated wind-solar demonstration project for green hydrogen production broke ground in Ordos, North China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, on Feb 16.

It is the first green hydrogen project developed by China Petrochemical Corporation (Sinopec Group) in the region and the largest green hydrogen coupling coal chemical project in the world.

The project will make full use of the rich wind and solar power in Inner Mongolia to produce green hydrogen.

The constructor, Sinopec Star Co., Ltd., is mainly responsible for five aspects of the project -- wind and solar power generation, power transmission and transformation, water-electrolytic hydrogen production, hydrogen storage and hydrogen transmission.

The installed capacities of wind and solar power generation are designed to be 450 megawatts (MW) and 270 MW respectively, and the designed annual output of green hydrogen made through water electrolysis is 30,000 tons and 240,000 tons of green oxygen. The project is expected to be able to store 288,000 standard cubic meters of hydrogen.

With a total investment of about 5.7 billion yuan ($827.07 million), the project is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1.43 million tons annually, contribute nearly 600 million yuan to GDP and increase tax revenue by nearly 30 million yuan per year.

Once operational, the green hydrogen and oxygen produced by the project will be used in carbon reduction of a nearby coal deep processing demonstration project.

It will effectively promote integrated development of the traditional synthetic material chemical and hydrogen energy industries, push forward clean and efficient utilization of coal, expand channels of raw chemical material sources, and form a new industrial mode and development path for hydrogen energy and renewable energy utilization.

What's more, the project is of great significance for guaranteeing national energy security, building a new type of energy system ,as well as promoting the transformation and upgrading of the energy structure and green low-carbon development in Inner Mongolia.

It will also contribute to increasing green hydrogen production capacity in China and the world and strongly support development of the green hydrogen industrial chain.
