POWERCHINA Makes Progress in Overseas Projects

Updated: February 23, 2023

Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA) has been in full swing in overseas projects since the beginning of 2023.

The Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway

Welding of the 500-meter steel rails of the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway (HSR) in Indonesia was completed this January, laying a solid foundation for on-schedule operation of the entire line.

As the first HSR in Southeast Asia, the Jakarta-Bandung line is the first of its kind overseas that was built to Chinese standards with Chinese technologies by Chinese equipment.

POWERCHINA was responsible for rail welding of the entire line, which took about 22 months.

The rails were produced to Chinese standards in the first overseas HSR rail welding base built during construction of the Jakarta-Bandung HSR. The first China-developed production line of its kind was put into operation in Indonesia, which promoted related Chinese technology, equipment and standards to go global.

The Diamer-Bhasha dam in Pakistan

Construction of the Diamer-Bhasha dam, the largest water-control project in Pakistan, is proceeding in full swing.

It is expected to be the world's highest and largest roller-compacted concrete dam upon completion.

With a height of 272 meters, the project will have an installed capacity of 4.5 million kilowatts and is expected to generate about 18.1 billion kilowatt-hours of power annually.

The São Paulo Line 2 in Brazil

The São Paulo Line 2 project is the first subway project built by Sinohydro Bureau 11 Co., Ltd, a subsidiary of POWERCHINA, in the Americas. The construction started in early 2020 and nearly 40 percent has now been completed.

The Tarbela Hydropower Station in Pakistan

Located over the trunk stream of the Indian River, the Tarbela Hydropower Station is currently the largest of its kind in Pakistan. The 4th and 5th phases expansion project is expected to increase the station’s total installed capacity to 2,820 megawatts.

The Kindar Photovoltaic Project in Central Myanmar

The Kindar Photovoltaic Project in Central Myanmar, one of the first 100 MW photovoltaic project cluster in the country, was put into operation on Jan 18, 2023.

The station is equipped with seven PV arrays and has an installed capacity of 40.28 MW.

A result of the Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar Economic Corridor, the PV project cluster is the largest of its kind in the country and the first overseas PV project invested and built by POWERCHINA.

The cluster includes five PV projects and has an installed capacity of 160 MW. It is capable of generating 342 million kWh of power annually, meeting demands of one million rural households.

School cluster project in Iraq

On Jan 29, the foundation concreting work of the Iraq School Cluster Project contracted by POWERCHINA was completed.

Covering an area of 150,000 square meters, the Iraq School Cluster Project includes 52 schools - 15 elementary, 26 middle and 11 at the high school level. It is of great significance in improving local livelihoods.

Cross-island Line in Singapore

With a total length of approximately 50 kilometers, the Cross-island Line project in Singapore is the longest underground transport line in the country. Once operational, it is expected to connect the eastern and western regions of Singapore.

Chengdu Engineering Corporation Limited, a subsidiary of POWERCHINA, has participated in design and construction of the project.

Rupsha 800 MW Combined Cycle Power Plant Project

On Feb 2, the No. 1 combustion turbine generator of the Rupsha 800 MW Combined Cycle Power Plant Project in Bangladesh, which was contracted by POWERCHINA Hubei Engineering Co., Ltd, made key progress.

The Rupsha 800 MW Combined Cycle Power Plant is the largest gas-fired combined cycle power plant that is still under construction and the largest single-unit combustion turbine power plant in Bangladesh. It is a key part of Bangladesh's overall power plan.

Once operational, the plant is expected to greatly relieve power shortages in southwestern cities of the country and the surrounding areas, and will be of great significance in promoting local economic development and expanding employment.

Gouina Hydropower Station in Mali

As of Feb 3, 2023, the Gouina Hydropower Station in Mali had generated more than 580 million kWh of power, providing clean power for economic and social development of Mali and neighboring countries and regions.

The Gouina Hydropower Station sends power to Mali, Senegal and Mauritania, and supports the entire basin of the Senegal River. It plays a key role in relieving power shortages in West Africa.

All three generator units of the station were put into operation in April 2022.
