A launch ceremony to announce operation of Line 6, the first urban light rail in Bangladesh, was held on Dec 28, 2022, in Dhaka.
The Light Rail Line 6 is the first urban rail project developed in Bangladesh to improve traffic conditions and the urban environment. It has a total length of about 20 kilometers and a total investment of about 220 billion taka.
The consortium of Power Construction Corporation of China and Thailand-based the International Institute for Trade and Development was responsible for the construction of the CP02 section of the light rail project, the contract value of which was about 15.9 billion taka.
The CP02 section included construction of the administrative office, training center, conference center, the operation center and operation control center of the light rail and supporting facilities like sheds for parking, maintenance and washing.
Operation of the Light Rail Line 6 kicked off the country's era of electrified rail transportation, which is of great significance.
