Construction started on Wanlong Bridge, the world's largest-span self-anchored suspension bridge located in Nansha District of Guangzhou City, on Dec 15.
The bridge was designed by China Railway Siyuan Survey and Design Group Co., Ltd. and constructed by China Railway Construction Bridge Engineering Bureau Group Co., Ltd. and China Railway 18th Bureau Group Corporation Limited, all of which are subsidiaries of China Railway Construction Corporation Limited.
The project is planned to be an urban trunk road and will be an important river crossing channel connecting Wanqingsha Town and Longxue Island, the international shipping and logistics center. Incorporating bridge aesthetic concepts into its design, Wanlong Bridge uses the unique cultural symbol of Wok Room, a local residential architectural tradition from Lingnan area of China, in its design, which is also expected to display modern aesthetics.
With a total length of 1,150 meters and a main span of 608 meters, the bridge will be constructed by using elliptical steel cable structure systems, a novel method.
Featuring large bending moment of the main tower and complex structure of the joint section, the bridge tower adopts the retard-bonded prestressed steel-concrete joint section, which is convenient for construction. A complete set of new construction technologies will be used and BIM has been applied in the whole design process, which will help realize intelligent management in design, construction and maintenance.
After the project is completed, it will strengthen the freight distribution of Nansha Port, improve regional transportation services, and help enhance Nansha's comprehensive competitiveness in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
