The Tseung Kwan O Cross Bay Bridge in Hong Kong, a main part of the Cross Bay Link, opened to traffic on Dec 11.
Located in the Sai Kung District, the Tseung Kwan O Cross Bay Bridge is the first offshore overpass in Hong Kong to feature a carriageway, pedestrian way, cycle track and viewing platform.
It is a new landmark cross-bay bridge after the Tsing Ma Bridge and the Stonecutters Bridge. It is expected to be a green passage for entering and leaving the city center, which will benefit local people.
With a total length of about 1.8 kilometers, the 35.8-meter-wide bridge has a 200-meter-span external-floating butterfly-shaped steel main arch. It is currently the longest-spanned and heaviest individual steel arch bridge in the region.
It's worth noting that the arches of the bridge were built with S690 steel, the first time the ultra-high-duty steel was widely used in bridge construction in the world.
In addition, it was the first time the float-over method was used in bridge erection in China.
China Road & Bridge Corporation, a subsidiary of China Communications Construction Company Limited, was responsible for the construction of the bridge.
