The first generator unit of the Sihanoukville project, the largest thermal power project invested and built by China Huadian Corporation Ltd. (CHD) in Cambodia, was put into operation on Nov 1.
Located in the Bay of Kompong Som, Northeast of Sihanoukville, the project includes construction of two 350,000-kilowatt supercritical power generating units and an 8,000-metric-ton coal berth, as well as a 2,000-ton heavy cargo berth. It is a key project invested and built by CHD in a country participating in the Belt and Road Initiative and the largest individual power project that China had ever invested in Cambodia.

It was built to Chinese standards with Chinese technologies and China-made equipment. Construction of the project started on Aug 18, 2020. Once fully operational, it is expected to form a hydro-thermal complementary pattern that will improve Cambodia's power source structure and power infrastructure and boost its economic and social development.
