World's Longest-Span Railway-Highway Co-Built Bridge Breaks Ground

Updated: November 15, 2022

The Xihoumen railway-highway dual-use bridge of the Ningbo-Zhoushan railway in East China's Zhejiang Province broke ground on Oct 31.

Designed and constructed by China Railway Bridge Science Research Institute, Ltd. and China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group Co., Ltd. respectively, both subsidiaries of China Railway Group Limited, the bridge is expected to be 2,664 meters with a 1,488-meter main span cable-stayed-suspension system. It is the world's longest-span railway-highway co-built bridge.

Both the railway and the highway section of the bridge will be on the same level: two railway lines in the middle and six highway lanes on the two sides.

Located between the Zhoushan islands, the bridge links the Jintang and Cezi islands. The strong wind, high waves, deep sea and swift rapids added to the difficulty of its construction.

As a supporting transport passage of the Yiwu-Ningbo-Zhoushan opening channel, the Ningbo-Zhoushan railway will play a key role in building the "one-hour traffic circle" within Zhejiang Province and realizing integrated development of Ningbo and Zhoushan.
