Multipurpose Small Reactor in Hainan Completes Hoisting of Heaviest Part

Updated: July 26, 2022

Linglong One, a multipurpose small modular reactor (SMR) demonstration project based in the Changjiang Nuclear Power Plant in South China's Hainan Province, completed hoisting of the upper cylinder, its heaviest part, on July 6.

The cylinder is a key part that guarantees security of the workshop and its hoisting laid a solid foundation for high-quality future construction of the reactor.

The upper cylinder of the steel containment is about 15 meters high and weighs about 720 metric tons, the heaviest component of the entire project. It consists of 32 pieces in four layers.

Linglong One, developed by China National Nuclear Corporation, is the world's first inland SMR for commercial use.

The company owns its independent intellectual property rights.

Linglong One has high security and wide application fields. It can be built in various kinds of environments. It is the first third-generation SMR approved by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Construction of the project started on July 13, 2021, and it is scheduled to be completed within 58 months. At present, construction of nuclear and conventional islands is underway and all engineering work is progressing smoothly.
