Kela-Kashen Natural Gas Zone in China’s Tarim Basin Produces over 150 m-ton Oil, Gas Equivalent

Updated: July 13, 2022

As of June 28, 2022, the Kela-Kashen natural gas zone of the Tarim Oilfield of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) had produced more than 188.67 billion cubic meters of natural gas, the equivalent of over 150 million metric tons of oil and gas.

The consumption of the output equals the energy produced by burning more than 170 million tons of standard coal, and a reduction of over 185 million tons of carbon dioxide.

Located on the northern edge of the Tarim Basin in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the natural gas zone has complicated underground structures and rare gas reservoir types. The natural gas is buried 6,500 to 8,000 meters underground with a formation pressure of more than 100 Megapascals.

CNPC's Tarim oilfield company is devoted to stable and highly-efficient production of the natural gas field and has come up with highly-efficient technologies to develop, produce and manage the ultra-deep and high-pressure gas field.

So far, six wells in the area have realized accumulated natural gas output of more than 10 billion cubic meters and 17 wells have produced over 1 billion cubic meters of natural gas.

It's worth noting that the company has built several natural gas production landmarks like the highly-efficient natural gas development demonstration zone, the country's first ultra-deep clastic rock natural gas production base with annual output of 10 billion cubic meters and its deepest inland gas field.
