Updated: June 17, 2022

The Ruzibazi hydropower station in Burundi, the largest China-aided overseas hydropower station, was put into full operation after its last generator unit passed a 72-hour trial operation.

Designed and built by Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA), the station is located on the Ruzibazi River in southern Bujumbura, capital of Burundi.

With a total installed capacity of 15,000 kilowatts, the station is installed with three horizontal-axle pelton turbine generator units.

During construction, engineering technologies were continuously optimized to improve engineering efficiency.

In addition, hundreds of local workers were recruited to work for the project, improving local employment.

The station, upon full operation, is expected to increase power supply for the country by about one third, which will help lift it out of power shortages and support industrial production. Meanwhile, the operation of the station will also boost national economic development and contribute to local livelihoods.
