A double-shield full-face hard rock tunnel boring machine (TBM) made by China Railway Construction Heavy Industry Corporation Limited has been put into operation in the Bor River comprehensive environmental treatment project in Serbia.
It was the first China-made TBM to be used in an overseas mining project.
According to the company, the machine is 310 meters long and weighs 1,600 metric tons and will be used in construction of an 8,324.23-meter long and 5.49-meter diameter tunnel under operating railways and near a mining area.
In order to guarantee smooth tunneling, the company optimized the cutter design, segment handling and installation and related supporting system, and installed an pre-grouting system, and also established a spare parts depository. A whole life cycle design was made for the project and experienced technical personnel were also sent to ensure operation of the TBM.
