Liu Feixiang: Promoting Development of TBM Industry to Higher Level

Updated: March 11, 2022

It is crucial to carry out research and development of key component technologies of the tunnel boring machine (TBM) industry to accelerate realization of China's goal of self-reliance and self-improvement in science and technology, a deputy to the 13th National People's Congress (NPC) said.

This year's government work report delivered at the opening meeting of the fifth session of the 13th NPC on March 5 highlighted promoting technological innovation and industrial optimization and upgrading to improve development quality.

Liu Feixiang, also chairman of China Railway Construction Heavy Industry Corporation Ltd. (CRCHI), a subsidiary of China Railway Construction Corporation Limited (CRCC), said that CRCHI will step up efforts to make progress in key TBM components to realize self-reliance and self-improvement in science and technology.

Concerning underground engineering equipment industries, Liu made suggestions on technological innovation, industrial chain improvement and smart upgrading. With his efforts, underground engineering equipment industries like TBM have already achieved leapfrog development from importing product replacements to exporting them.

At the annual sessions of the national legislative and advisory bodies this year, Liu suggested making the free trade zones pilots to explore new channels for second-hand equipment exports.

He also mentioned that with the continuing rapid development of urban construction projects in both scale and numbers, including mining and water conservancy projects, the overall technology of China-made equipment is taking a lead in the world. However, some domestically-made supporting basic parts lack reliability and performance indicators cannot meet the designed requirements. The intelligence of some products also needs to be improved.

At present, CRCHI is pushing forward digital and intelligent transformation in aspects of research and development, design, robotics, manufacturing and service and management, intending to realize domestic manufacturing of all tunneling equipment.
