Tan Minqiang: Stepping up Efforts to Make Breakthroughs in Core Technologies

Tan Minqiang, deputy to the National People's Congress, on March 5 shared his focus on technology and innovation in a government work report delivered at the opening meeting of the fifth session of the 13th NPC.

Tan, also deputy chief of engineering of Dongfeng Motor Corporation, said that the government work report says that China's GDP exceeded 114 trillion yuan ($17.7 trillion) in 2021, up by 8.1 percent despite complicated international political and economic situations. It is a positive start to the nation’s second centenary goal of fully building a modern socialist country and to its 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25).

As an NPC deputy working in the technology of automobiles field, Tan stressed that deepening implementation of innovation-driven development has been included in the government reports in the last two years and this year's report gives even more detailed plans including one of 10 years foreseeing basic research and a three-year action plan for scientific and technological system reform.

Tan said that the report shows China's determination to enhance technology and innovation in the 14th Five-Year Plan period.

The government report also mentions strengthening national strategic technology capacity by building key laboratories, which is a focus of Dongfeng Motor Corporation.

Tan said he planned to propose two new suggestions on security of automobile industrial supply and industrial chain and construction of national technology and innovation centers at the annual sessions of the top legislative and advisory bodies.

He also said that he will work together with his peers to work on key technologies in the fields of new energy and intelligent connected vehicles to contribute to the country's goal of realizing high-level self-reliance and self-improvement in science and technology.
