First 5G Smart Port in Greater Bay Area Opens for Service

Updated: December 07, 2021

Mawan port, the first 5G-based smart port in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, recently went into operation.

Located at Shekou Port in Shenzhen, South China's Guangdong Province, Mawan smart port covers about 980,000 square meters and has a 1,930-meter shoreline.

With two dedicated berths for 200,000-metric ton containers, the port can handle more than 3 million containers and is available for the largest container vessels in the world.

Operation of the smart port is expected to reduce emissions by about 1,350 tons of nitrogen oxide annually and contribute to building Shenzhen into a global marine transport hub and a pilot city of "building China's strength in transportation".

The port was designed by CCCC Third Harbor Consultants Co., Ltd. and built by CCCC Fourth Harbor Engineering Co., Ltd., both subsidiaries of China Communications Construction Company Limited (CCCC).
