The first new-type carbon dioxide energy storage verification project in China broke ground on Oct 22, marking beginning of the energy storage's application in engineering in China.
To support China's goal of reaching peak carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, coal is playing a less important role in power generation, being replaced by clean power like solar and wind, which requires the creation of a new kind of energy system.
In response to the need for safe, carbon-free, green and highly-efficient energy storage, Dongfang Turbine Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Dongfang Electric Corporation, Exax Energy Tech and the School of Energy and Power Engineering of Xi'an Jiaotong University jointly developed their new-type carbon dioxide energy storage technology.

The new high-efficiency carbon dioxide gas-liquid two-state energy storage system has a greater power level, capacity and regional adaptability and outstanding economic benefits in terms of capacity and long-term energy storage.
In addition, the system can be used to store both clean energy and traditional thermal power. It can also help improve peak shaving capacity and comprehensive energy utilization efficiency of the power generator unit.
