Jinsha Hydropower Station in Full Operation

Updated: October 27, 2021

The Jinsha Hydropower Station in Panzhihua, Southwest China's Sichuan Province, is now in service, as its No. 4 generator unit recently went into operation.

An iconic clean energy project, the station is a main part of the upper Yangtze River Economic Belt and one of 30 major projects in China's development campaign in its western regions.

It has four 140,000-kilowatt axial flow water-turbine generator units. The generator unit that recently started operation has a 10.65-meter wheel, the largest of its kind that is still under construction in the world.

As all four generator units are now in service, the station is expected to generate nearly 2.18 billion kilowatt-hours of power annually.

The power generated is the same as burning 790,000 tons of standard coal, an equivalent to reduction of 2 million, 6,000 and 5,000 tons of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide respectively, which will contribute to environmental protection in the upper Yangtze River region and realizing China's goal of reaching peak carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and reaching carbon neutrality by 2060.

Sinohydro Bureau 7 Co., Ltd, a subsidiary of Power Construction Corporation of China, was responsible for the construction and installation of the dam at the station and construction of its sandstone concrete and water supply systems, as well as security and operation.
