The world's highest expressway linking Nagchu and Lhasa, the capital city of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, went into operation on Aug 21 with trial opening of its final 227-kilometer section between Nagchu and Yangbajain.
Built in an area with an average altitude of more than 4,500 meters, the four-lane Nagchu-Lhasa Expressway shortens travel time between the two cities to three hours.
The Nagchu-Lhasa Expressway is a key part of the expressway linking Beijing and Lhasa and is expected to enlarge transport capacity and security level of the passage connecting Tibet with Northwest China's Qinghai Province.
The 68-kilometer Yangbajain-Lhasa section of the expressway with a design speed of 100 kilometers per hour opened to traffic on Oct 1, 2020.
Construction of the section between Nagchu and Golmud is scheduled to break ground during China's 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25).
