China Welcomes Its First 1 Million-KW Offshore Wind Farm

Updated: August 05, 2021

The installed capacity of the hoisted wind turbine at the Yangjiang Shapa offshore wind farm in South China's province of Guangdong exceeded 1 million on July 15, marking the birth of China's first 1 million-kilowatt offshore wind farm.

Invested and built by China Three Gorges Renewables (Group) Co., Ltd., the project is expected to have the largest capacity of any offshore wind farm in Asia.

The project is designed for 269 wind generator units with a total installed capacity of 1.7 million kW. It also includes construction of three offshore booster stations that will be linked with the on-shore centralized control center by 220-kilovolt submarine cables.

It will be built in five phases.

Once fully operational, the project is expected to provide about 4.7 billion kilowatt-hours of power annually, an equivalent to burning about 1.5 million metric tons of standard coal and creating 4 million tons of carbon dioxide.

The amount will meet power demands of about 2 million households and will contribute to energy structure transformation of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
