China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) said on May 27 that its Baiyun gas field in eastern South China Sea achieved more than 40 billion cubic meters in both total natural gas production and export of natural gas.
Home to rich oil and natural gas resources, the eastern South China Sea is a major offshore production region of such energy. A main natural gas field in the area, the Baiyun gas field has been improving clean energy supply to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
The annual output of CNOOC's branch in the field meets nearly one-fourth of the demands of the Greater Bay Area.
In 2020 during the COVID-19 outbreak, the gas field was in full swing in increasing gas storage and production in response to the challenges brought by the epidemic.
Operation of the Liuhua 29-1 deepsea gas field in 2020 marked formation of a deepsea gas field cluster including the Liwan 3-1, Liuhua 34-2, Panyu 34-1 and Panyu 35-1 fields, which brought the region's production capacity to 100 billion cu m.
