Wudongde Hydropower Station to be Fully Operational by July

Updated: April 26, 2021

The last four generator units of the Wudongde Hydropower Station, which has the world's largest unit installed capacity, are under final assembly and are expected to be fully operational by July 1.

The station is expected to contribute to national economic development and help China achieve its goal of peak carbon dioxide emissions and carbon neutrality.

Located at the border of Southwest China's Sichuan and Yunnan provinces, the Wudongde Hydropower Station started operation in June 2020.

So far, eight generator units at the station are in sound operation and have already set a world record by producing 3.4 million kilowatts of power within half a month.

By 22:45 on April 15, the station had operated safely for 291 continuous days and generated 20 billion kWh of clean power.

That amount equates to burning 6.27 million metric tons of standard coal, and means that about 15.68 million tons of carbon dioxide and 53,000 tons of sulfur dioxide were not released into the atmosphere.

If each kWh of power is capable of adding 13.8 yuan ($2.13) to the economy, 20 billion kWh of power can contribute about 276 billion yuan to the growth of the GDP.

The station has also played a role in flood control and relieving of power shortages.
