Updated: April 15, 2021

The Lhasa-Nyingchi railway, the first electrified railway in Southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, is now under static inspection and is scheduled to open for service on June 30.

A major project of China's 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-20), the 435.5-kilometer railway has a designed speed of 160 kilometers per hour.

China Railway Electrification Engineering Group Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Railway Group Limited, was responsible for the project, which included installation of supports of the overhead lines and hanging posts in the tunnel, construction of the 540.6-kilometer overhead lines, nine traction substations and 10 distribution substations.

So far, all construction has been completed and the electrification system is primarily done, meeting the static inspection standard.

Upon operation, it will improve the railway network in the region and boost local economic and social development.

As it is an electrified railway, it will also play a role in environmental protection and green development in the region.
