GBA Sees Its First Offshore Wind Power Project in Operation

Updated: April 14, 2021

The Jinwan Offshore Wind Farm in Zhuhai, South China's Guangdong Province, the first of its kind in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, was connected to the grid on April 2.

Generally contracted by Guangdong Electric Power Design Institute Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Energy Engineering Group Co., Ltd. (Energy China Group), the wind farm has a total installed capacity of 300 megawatts and features 55 domestically-made generator units.

An onshore centralized control center and an offshore booster station were also built as supporting facilities.

Upon operation, the farm is expected to provide nearly 800 million kWh of clean power annually, which is enough to satisfy one year of power demands of 300,000 households.

The amount equals burning of about 240,000 tons of standard coal which would release about 460,000 tons of carbon dioxide.

The project will promote transformation and upgrading of energy structure in the Greater Bay Area and contribute to realizing the target of peak carbon dioxide emission and carbon neutrality.

Offshore wind power is regarded as a potential green and clean power source. With a long coastline and strong winds, Guangdong currently has about 6.9 million kilowatts of wind power installations under construction.
