Tibet's First Electrified Railway Makes Key Progress

Updated: April 09, 2021

Welding of the 500-meter rail of the Lhasa-Nyingchi railway's main line in Southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region was completed on March 26.

A major project of China's 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-20), it was Tibet's first electrified railway with jointless track across sections and has a designed speed of 160 kilometers per hour.

Constructed by China Railway 11 Bureau Group Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Railway Construction Corporation Limited, the railway crosses the Yarlung Zangbo River 16 times and 74 percent of the sections are bridges and tunnels.

The recent progress lays a solid foundation for its full operation.
