World's Largest Underwater Open Caisson Completes Concreting

Updated: March 22, 2021

The bottom of the No. 5 pier of the Changzhou-Taizhou Yangtze River Bridge in East China's Jiangsu Province, which has the world's largest underwater open caisson foundation, recently completed its concreting process.

A smart monitoring system developed by the company was used during the concreting. More than 200 monitoring components were installed inside the caisson, collecting real-time monitoring data.

Following the concreting, the caisson weighs more than 320,000 tons. This means it will be capable of supporting the bridge, which will have a main span of more than 1,000 meters.

The project was contracted by CCCC Second Harbor Engineering Company Ltd., a subsidiary of China Communications Construction Company Ltd (CCCC).

The Changzhou-Taizhou Yangtze River Bridge is the first of its kind to integrate an expressway, an ordinary highway and an inter-city railway on the river.
