New High-Speed Railway Begins operation in E China

Updated: February 23, 2021

A new high-speed railway in East China's Jiangsu Province went into operation on Feb 8, 2021, stretching 185 kilometers from Xuzhou in the west to Lianyungang in the east.

The easternmost and last leg of the Lianyungang-Urumqi high-speed railway between Jiangsu and Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the Xuzhou-Lianyungang high-speed railway's becoming operational marks completion of the longest east-to-west line of China's "eight vertical and eight horizontal" trunk railway lines.

Primarily designed by China Railway Siyuan Survey and Design Group Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Railway Construction Corporation Limited, the railway features seven stations and a designed speed of 350 kilometers per hour.

The newly operated railway will shorten travel times between areas in north Jiangsu and Nanjing, Zhengzhou in Henan Province and Jinan in Shandong Province.

It is also expected to improve the national railway network, promote economic and social development in north Jiangsu and boost integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta region.

The Xuzhou-Lianyungang high-speed railway is connected with the existing railways linking Xuzhou, Lanzhou in Gansu Province and Urumqi, forming a 3,422-kilometer high-speed railway land bridge to support development of the New Eurasian Continental Bridge Economic Corridor.
