China's Deepsea Oil Storage Platform to Promote Gas Field Development

Updated: February 20, 2021

Shenhai Yihao, also known as DeepSea No. 1, the world's first 100,000-ton deepsea semi-submersible oil storage platform, arrived at the Lingshui waters southeast of South China's Hainan Province on Feb 6, 2021, according to China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC).

Shenhai Yihao was completed and delivered in Yantai, a coastal city in East China's Shandong Province, on Jan 14.

It will be installed and adjusted at the Lingshui 17-2 gas field, marking a key step toward the operation of China's first 1,500-meter self-run deepsea gas field.

The Lingshui 17-2 gas field, about 150 kilometers from Hainan, has a proved geological reserve of more than 100 billion cubic meters.

It is expected to provide 3 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually to South China's Guangdong and Hainan provinces as well as Hong Kong, which will meet one fourth of the civil gas demands in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).

In addition, the operation of Shenhai Yihao is also expected to drive the development of other new deepsea medium-sized gas fields such as Lingshui 18-1 and Lingshui 25-1.

The fields are intended to evolve into a natural gas production zone with an output of 1 trillion cubic meters of natural gas in the South China Sea based on the established natural gas pipeline network linking the GBA and the Hainan free trade port.
