China's first tunnel beneath the Yellow River was recently dug through in Jinan, capital city of Shandong Province.
It is the largest-diameter shield tunnel in the Yellow River basin and China's largest-diameter highway-railway dual-use tunnel under construction.
Located on the central axis of Jinan, the 4,760-meter tunnel has two layers. The upper layer is a two-way six-lane highway and the lower one is for rail transit.
The tunnel is scheduled to open for traffic in October 2021. Once operable, it will allow people to cross the Yellow River in 4 minutes by car and 2.5 minutes by subway.
China Railway Siyuan Survey and Design Group Co., Ltd. and China Railway 14th Bureau Group Co., Ltd., both subsidiaries of China Railway Construction Corporation Limited, are responsible for its design and construction.
To make full use of the space and protect the environment along the river, no pollutants or emissions were released during construction.
