Beijing-Harbin High-Speed Railway Now Fully Operational

Updated: January 28, 2021

The Beijing-Chengde section, the last leg of the Beijing-Harbin high-speed railway, opened to traffic on Jan 22, 2021, shortening travel time between Beijing and Harbin, Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province to within five hours.

The newly opened section, about 192 kilometers long, features seven stations in the Chaoyang, Shunyi, Huairou and Miyun districts of Beijing and Hebei Province's Chengde city as well as its Xinglong county and Anjiang village.

Construction of the four stations in Beijing was built by China Railway Construction Corporation Limited.

The eight-kilometer Wangjing Tunnel is the first passenger-dedicated underground shield tunnel in the urban area of Beijing and the first and longest of its kind in China. It is also the only double-hole single-line tunnel with a large enough diameter to serve the Beijing-Chengde railway section.

It's worth mentioning that smart robots were used in construction of the Lihuading Tunnel, the longest of the Beijing-Harbin high-speed railway, which ensured high-quality engineering.

China's first traction substation in a city park was also built for the railway. A traction substation converts electricity into a form of power usable on a rail line. Compared to traditional standard outdoor traction substations, the new one occupies only one fourth of the area.

A major player among China's "eight vertical and eight horizontal" trunk railway lines of the national high-speed railway service network, the 1,198-kilometer railway has a designed speed of 350 kilometers per hour.

The previous two sections between Harbin in Heilongjiang, Shenyang in Northeast China's Liaoning Province, and Chengde in North China's Hebei Province, began operation on Dec 1, 2012, and Dec 29, 2018, respectively.

The fully operation of the Beijing-Harbin high-speed railway makes Beijing a traffic hub with six railway stations and two international airports.
