State Grid Takes Care of Rare Birds

Updated: December 21, 2020

Poyang Lake in East China's Jiangxi province has been an important habitat for oriental white storks, a migratory bird species under first-class national protection in China. The birds have now discovered that power transmission towers in the area are ideal for their nests.

Two oriental white storks and a nest of their eggs were found on a tower in Qinglan Lake in Jiangxi, a part of the Poyang Lake area, this February by staff members of State Grid Corporation of China's subsidiary in Jiangxi province.

They took care of them and witnessed the birth of the young birds and their growth until they left the area.

Oriental white storks are used to returning to their old nests in winter.

As the weather grew colder and colder employees of the company climbed onto the tower to reinforce the nest, waiting for the birds' return.

Special devices were also installed on the tower to guarantee safe and stable power transmission while the birds are living there.
