Construction of China's Longest Underwater Tunnel Makes Key Progress

Updated: November 24, 2020

Key progress was made in construction of the Taihu Lake Tunnel on Nov 16 when its first cofferdam was removed to allow the backflow of 250,000 cubic meters of water, returning the 76,000 square meters of water to the lake.

Contracted by CCCC Third Harbor Engineering Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Communications Construction Company Limited (CCCC), the 10.79-kilometer-long and 43.6-meter-wide tunnel stretches through the Taihu Lake Scenic Zone and is the longest of its kind under construction.

The tunnel is a section of the Southern Suzhou-Wuxi-Changzhou Expressway.

Once in operation, the highway is expected to relieve traffic pressure of the Wuxi-Suzhou section of the Shanghai-Nanjing Highway.

In addition, the highway will also promote tourism development in affected areas and play a role in high-quality development of the Yangtze River Delta region.

So far, construction of 8.3-kilometer tunnel floor, 6.1-kilometer top plate and 7.4-kilometer side wall has been completed.
