First Large-Scale Commercial Nuclear Power Plant in the Chinese Mainland Starts Operation

Construction of the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, started on Aug 7, 1987.

With a total investment of $4.6 billion and operated by China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN), the plant has two pressurized water reactor nuclear motor units with a gross installed capacity of 984,000 kW. It can produce nearly 15 billion kWh of power annually.

A joint venture project, the power plant was the first large-scale commercial nuclear power plant in the Chinese mainland.
