The Gezhouba project, a river-based hydropower plant with the world's largest low water head overflowing capacity, was the first large-scale water-control project designed, built and operated by China.

Construction of the project began on Dec 30, 1970 and ended in late 1988. The project was a milestone in the country's hydroelectric industry.
