Pingxiangcheng, a vessel carrying 162 containers, set off from Shanghai Port on Sept 26, 1978, reached Sydney and Melbourne ports in Australia on Oct 12 and 15 respectively and returned to Shanghai on Nov 12. It was the first international container liner route initiated since the founding of the People's Republic of China and the start of the country's modern shipping.
