The West-East Natural Gas Transmission pipeline project is regarded as an icon of China's western development drive.

Starting from Lunnan Town in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in the west and terminating in Shanghai in the east, the phase one section of the project was the first world-level natural gas pipeline completely designed and built by China.

The first large-scale importing natural gas pipeline in China, the phase two section links Horgos, Xinjiang, passes Guangzhou in Guangdong Province and Hong Kong in the south and finally reaches Shanghai as well.

The last section of the project transmits natural gas between Horgos and Fuzhou, Fujian Province.

More than 70 billion cubic meters of natural gas are transmitted annually through the project, replacing the energy created by 93.03 million tons of bulk coal which if burned would emit 107 million tons of carbon dioxide.
