The Dasherkandi Sewage Treatment Plant in Bangladesh, the largest of its kind in South Asia, has been delivered to its buyer and started operation.
Designed and built by Chengdu Engineering Corporation Limited, a subsidiary of Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA), the project is a key part of the Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar Economic Corridor and the Belt and Road Initiative.
Financed by the Chinese government, construction of the plant started on Aug 1, 2017. The project included construction of a sewage lifting pump station, the sewage transmission trunk pipe, the main sewage treatment plant area that can process 500,000 metric tons of sewage daily, and a sludge drying and incineration system that can handle a daily 580 tons of sludge.

The project is the first and the largest modern large-scale sewage treatment plant in Bangladesh. It is the first time that a sewage treatment plant and a sludge incineration plant has been completed and put into operation simultaneously in a single sewage treatment plant area in the country.
It's worth noting that it is also the first time the technology and equipment of "spray drying plus rotary kiln incineration process" with Chinese independent intellectual property rights has been put into operation in an overseas project.
As a critical livelihood project in Bangladesh, the sewage plant project provided 1,000 jobs for local people during construction.
Upon operation, it is expected to handle domestic sewage of nearly 5 million people living in Dhaka, capital of Bangladesh which will significantly improve the current water pollution situation of the city, earning it recognition from the Chinese Embassy in Bangladesh, relevant ministries of Bangladesh and its buyer, as well as the praise and affirmation of local residents.
