The first generator unit of the Mali Gouina hydropower station project recently started service after 72-hour trial operation, providing power for three countries.
Generally contracted by Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA), the hydropower station is a large-scale infrastructure project in the West African region built under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative.
Located over the Senegal River in Mali, the station has a 19-meter-high and 1,317-meter-long dam and a reservoir storage capacity of 136 million cubic meters. The station is designed with three axial-flow hydro-generator units and has a total installed capacity of 140 megawatts.

During construction of the project, thousands of jobs were provided for local people.
The project is expected to transmit power to Mali, Senegal and Mauritania, promoting connectivity of power grids in West Africa and boosting economic and social development in affected areas.
