Construction of a makeshift hospital in San Tin, the mainland-aided community quarantine facility in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, was completed on March 9, ahead of schedule.

The makeshift hospital has 720 isolation rooms and can set up more than 2,800 isolation beds. It is expected to help improve Hong Kong's capacity to admit and treat COVID-19 patients.

The hospital covers about 38,000 square meters with a building area of 15,000 sq m. It is made up by modular box-type houses, each room is equipped with facilities such as furniture and bedding, air conditioners, smoke detectors and fire extinguishers.

Braving the rain, construction of the hospital started on Feb 22. "We are well aware of the importance and urgency of the project," said the project's manager Gu Zipeng, adding that advantageous resources were deployed and made every minute count in the project's construction.

In response to the recent COVID-19 outbreak in Hong Kong, nine community quarantine facilities are included in the Central government-aided construction plan. In addition to the San Tin hospital, one in Tsing Yi is in operation and the other seven are making progress.
