World's First Super-Large LNG Dual-Fuel Crude Oil Tanker Delivered to COSCO SHIPPING Group

Updated: 2022-03-28

Yuan Rui Yang, the world's first super-large liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel crude oil tanker was delivered to China COSCO SHIPPING Corporation Limited (COSCO SHIPPING Group) on Feb 28.

Its delivery places the company among the leading users of green, environmentally-friendly and energy-saving technologies on large oil tankers.

Against the background of the global energy transformation, operation of the tanker is expected to be a model of energy conservation and emission reduction of the numbers of large oil tankers,  pushing forward the shipping industry's role in reaching the global goal of peaking carbon dioxide emissions and reaching carbon neutrality.

Designed and built by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited, the oil tanker has two separately-developed C-type 3,500-cubic-meter low-temperature chambers with complete proprietary intellectual property rights.

Different from traditional oil tankers, Yuan Rui Yang releases about 20 percent less carbon dioxide and 95 percent less sulfur dioxide when the oil tanker is powered by LNG. It also switches easily between its LNG and oil-power systems.

The ship has a range of 12,000 nautical miles when using LNG as fuel and can reach 24,000 nautical miles in the dual-fuel mode.

Developing green, low-carbon and sustainable shipment has been a hot issue in the global shipping industry and calls for cooperation of all parties along the industrial chain.

Relying on technological reserves and innovation, COSCO SHIPPING Group has launched the world's first LNG dual-fuel super-large crude tanker, China's first methyl alcohol dual-fuel very large crude carrier (VLCC) and its first ammonia-powered VLCC.

The company lowered oil consumption by promoting ship energy-saving technologies and operating ships at economical speed, which contributed to China's goal of peaking carbon dioxide emission by 2030 and reaching carbon neutrality by 2060.

It's worth noting that the company also joined hands with the China Classification Society to make breakthroughs in integrated development of LNG dual-fuel ships and the LNG industrial chain, achieving coordinated development of upstream and downstream enterprises along the supply chain and channeling green development in the shipping industry.
