Smart phones with BDS-3 Short Message Communication Function to Debut

Updated: 2022-03-24

China North Industries Group Corporation Limited (NORINCO Group) recently announced that smart phones equipped with the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS-3)-based short message communication function will soon make their market debut.

Such phones are expected to help ensure life and property safety.

The short message communication function enables two-way message delivery and reception based on the BDS-3-supported wireless communication network.

NORINCO Group demonstrated the BDS-3 short message communication function at an exhibition event in May 2021, showcasing message transmission between a smart phone and the BDS satellites 36,000 kilometers above the ground. It was a milestone of short message serving the public directly through a smart phone. The demonstration laid a solid technical foundation for a high-quality, convenient and better user experience of BDS-3's short message service.

The Beidou-3 short message communication has been upgraded on the basis of the last generation, improving the system service capacity and reducing the terminal transmitting power.

Construction of a civil BDS-3 short message communication application platform by NORINCO Group, China Mobile Communications Group Co., Ltd. and China Electronics Technology Group Corporation is now underway; the intention is to promote integration of the BDS-3 short message and the mobile telecommunication functions to realize public service.

In recent years, the BDS-3 system has shown its role in driving economic and social development. With its expanding application, it has entered a key phase of large-scale application and industrialized and global development.

For example, it has been used in real-time precision positioning of vehicles.
