China Petrochemical Corporation (Sinopec Group) said on Jan 29 that the construction of China's first million-metric-ton level carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) project has been completed.
Built by Sinopec Qilu Petrochemical Company and Sinopec Shengli Oilfield, the project is the largest CCUS full industrial chain demonstration base and model of its kind.
The two companies are responsible for carbon capture,as well as flooding and storage, respectively.
The recycling facility can handle one million tons of liquid carbon dioxide annually and was built specifically for carbon capture. The facility includes compression, cooling and liquefaction and refinery units as well as supporting parts.
The carbon dioxide captured and handled by Sinopec Qilu Petrochemical Company is then transported in a green way to Shengli Oilfield for flooding and underground storage.
The carbon dioxide will be injected into 73 wells in Shengli Oilfield. As the supercritical carbon dioxide is easily miscible to the crude, the injection will increase fluidity of the crude and improve the oil recovery rate.
Construction of the project started in July 2021.
