China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) announced on Feb 13 that the Shenhai Yihao ultra-deepsea gas field, dubbed Deep Sea No. 1, the first large-scale ultra-deepwater gas field independently explored and developed by China, has produced more than 1 billion cubic meters of natural gas since it went into operation on June 25, 2021.
It has played a key role in providing clean energy for the construction of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the Hainan Free Trade Port in the supply season.
The gas field is so far the most difficult-to-explore offshore ultra-deepwater gas field with the deepest average water depth independently discovered by China.
The Shenhai Yihao energy station, the world's first 100,000-ton deepsea semi-submersible oil production and storage platform, was specially developed for the gas field and is expected to stably provide 3 billion cubic meters of natural gas to South China's Guangdong and Hainan provinces and Hong Kong annually once it is operational. The energy volume will meet one quarter of the natural gas demand for people's living in the Greater Bay Area.
At present, CNOOC is stepping up efforts to promote the development of Deep Sea No. 2 and other gas fields based on Deep Sea No. 1, aiming to push forward construction of the natural gas area up to a capacity of 1 trillion cubic meters in the South China Sea to meet the growing demand for clean energy in the Greater Bay Area and the Hainan Free Trade Port.
