Construction of Kenya's Largest Water Conservancy Project Makes Progress

Updated: 2022-02-18

The first phase of the Thwake Multi-purpose Water Development Program, the largest water conservancy and livelihood project still under construction in Kenya, succeeded in its first interception of flow on Dec 31, 2021, a key step of the program's construction.

Built by China Gezhouba Group Corporation, a subsidiary of China Energy Engineering Group Co., Ltd., the program is a crucial infrastructure project in the country's 2030 clean energy plan.

Once operational, it will be used for water supply, flood control, irrigation and power generation.

It is estimated that the program can provide about 1 billion cubic meters of water annually, which will play an irreplaceable role in ensuring safe water supply in affected areas, improving water ecology of downstream rivers and developing highly-efficient agriculture.
