Oman's Largest Renewable Energy Project Completed

Updated: 2022-01-30

Construction of the Ibri Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Project, the largest renewable energy facility in Oman, has been completed.

Built by Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA), the project covers an area of 1,154 hectares, equivalent to the combined size of 1,600 standard football pitches.

With a total installed capacity of 607 megawatt-peaks, it is the largest PV project under the framework of the country's national energy strategy.

The project, consisting of 1.5 million modules, is the world's first to equip the tracking brackets with a cleaning robot, achieving compatibility and coordination between PV tracking and automatic cleaning systems.

The solution is expected to improve PV power generation efficiency and lower operation costs, and will start a trend for operation and maintenance of large-scale power stations in the Middle East.

Once operational, the project will be able to produce 1,598 gigawatt-hours of power annually, meeting the demands of 50,000 local households, which means a reduction of 340,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year, contributing to the country's carbon reduction goal.

The project will also play a role in improving the grid's peaking capacity and relieving power shortages during peak hours in some parts of Oman.
